Brian McLaren and Kirbyjon Caldwell Endorse Obama

Watch this video, then I'd love to hear your thoughts...

  • Is this how a pastor should leverage his/her influence?
  • Does a public endorsement like this instantly decrease your influence in the minds of 50% of your potential audience?
  • How is it helpful for a spiritual leader to tell his church who he is voting for?

I've long respected how Mark Beeson has led us to stay away from endorsements, even if the political candidate attends our church. Rather, we teach civil responsibility (i.e. why you should vote), and biblical issues that should be at the forefront of your mind when voting (i.e. caring for the poor).

I personally love politics and the process of the elections, and typically believe passionately that one candidate would be better for our country/state/district. But I won't even put a candidate's sign in my front yard or bumper sticker on my car, because I know it instantly puts a wall between me and some of my neighbors. I don't want to lose an opportunity to help them on their spiritual journey just to get "my guy" elected.

What do you think?
